Looking For Someone to Inspect F36 CF Mast?

Posted by Nick Piediscalzi (nickpied@…>)

Greetings All, I’m in contract to buy my first Freedom,a 1988 F36 in
the Los Angeles area. I want to make sure the CF mast is sound, but
don’t have enough knowledge or background to do it myself. Can anyone
recommend a rigger in the LA area who has experience with CF masts and
would know what to look for? Many thanks!

To find a rigger familiar with CF masts you might want to talk to a
few carbon spar builders to see if they have any recommendations.

Look very carefully at any holes that were not drilled by the
factory. The best way to mount anything on the mast is with a
stainless collar or chemically bonding. A series of holes in the
same sting of fibers can weaken the mast. Some missing rivets in the
sail track are acceptable. Use aluminum replacement rivets. Lighting
strike history would be a huge concern. Any sign of impact damage
from a bridge or other structure could cause a problem.
Generally the masts are relatively trouble free.
If you hire a rigger to inspect the mast make sure he inspects the
sheaves to see if they are in need of replacement. Unrelated to
pysical defects in the mast is noise from stuff slapping around. Ask
the owner if they experience slapping noises while anchored. If
possible listen and check for yourself. At deck level look at the
age, condition, and operation of turning blocks and rope clutches if
installed. It the boat has a dodger make sure it doesn’t get too
much in the way while you’re turning a winch handle.
At the base of the mast your surveyor will check the condition of
the step and the bolt that runs through the base of the mast.

Any sort of track and car system is a big plus on a Freedom.
Friction issues abound and people take different approaches. Some
people simply add muscle or leverage (the bigger hammer theory)
while others work to reduce friction. If the owner isn’t present for
the sea trial and you see a can of Sail-Kote laying around you might
want to give the lower section of track and hardware a quick spray.

Hi Nick, My husband and I just purchased a 1996 F40/40 in Santa Barbara. Our surveyor found a rigger familiar with CF masts in the LAX area. His name is Matt Schulz. His email is mattschulz@… An alternate email address for him is Matt@… Also here’s his website: http://www.schulzsurveyors.com/resumset.htm It is my understanding that Matt worked with a CF mast manufacturer on the east coast years ago. We ended up not using him, because my husband went up the mast instead. But he was recommended by our surveyor. If you have not yet chosen a surveyor, I would like to highly recommend John Bowman. He lives in Orange County, and will travel to the LAX area. He has all the IAMI/SAMS surveyor certifications. We used him 5 years ago when we first puchased our Cal-35, and was so impressed with him, that we begged him to drive up to Santa Barbara for our F40/40 survey. He spent 7 hours with us aboard Eos, going thru the boat and systems with a fine tooth comb. His charge was $15 per foot. His phone # is 714-293-1740, and his website is: http://www.journeytoadventure.net/generic.html;$sessionid$HVLIVHIAAD3ALWGIHUUXBMWYZA4S1PX0?pid=6 Good luck with your
new Freedom! We just closed on our boat the first week of August, and have sailed her twice. We are thrilled as she sails like a DREAM!!! Matt Schulz did the survey on our 1987
Freedom 28 and did a fine job. He was thorough and helpful and really knows his
way around the LA/Marina del Ray area including yards, mechanics, specialty
vendors, etc. He is a very good resource as well as really supporting sailing
with under privileged kids via his Life Sail organization.
