Whoops
My halyard for the mainsail sliped through the jam cleat and went up inside the mast!
I imagine that it’s fairly difficult to re-rig this line with the mast in and that I may as well hang it up for the season. Does anyone have experience with installing a new halyard through the mast?
Sounds like you don’t have a spare halyard. If you have a way
to get up the mast drop a messenger line with a small enough weight at the end
(small enough to exit the mast) or a short length of small chain or bicycle
chain. Using a bent coat hanger or wire or tool just reach in and fish it out.
Of course it may wrap around wires etc but it can work. Check for
friction/entanglements.

I would find a nice piece of small steel chain like a neck chain for dog tags but heavier and a power magnet. Measure the length from the top to where it exits on the side of the mast about chest high. This will give you a reference point. Then using a strong enough line attach the chain and drop it over the sleeve up top and use the magnet to slide it down either the port or starboard sides. I would think that is where there is less interference. I would also glue felt on the magnet so it slides easily. And then guide it to your exit point. the magnet has to be very strong I would think to work. Or maybe it wouldn’t work but it might be a shot. Hate to see anyone give up sailing time.BobOn Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 9:06 AM, Randy wrote:Whoops My halyard for the mainsail sliped through the jam cleat and went up inside the mast! Oh, I lost my halyard in the middle of the night sailing last summer. I found myself a mooring for the next night and got myself up the mast. After swearing for about 30 minutes trying to jam the halyard down the mast…I called down to the deck for some fishing line and a small weight. Brilliant!!! the line and weight fell down the mast easily and my friend at the bottom took a coat hanger and grabbed the line at the rigging hole. With the fishing line securely tied to the halyard, it easily was rigged again!!! Not that difficult, no need to pull the mast…good luck!

I think this will work great!
I know when I put my finger in the hole for the outhaul in the mast I felt a texture like … a birds nest- hopefully the magnet can help the chain get past it and to the hole!
Thank you so much for your help!!
