I want to install a Mast Head Tri Light on my Hoyt 32. The white
steaming light is seemingly in the way. It has been suggested that I
have the white steaming light installed on the mast, thus freeing up
space atop the spar. This would mean drilling at least one hole in the
CF spar, something I have been heard is a big NO-NO. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for you suggestions.
I have drilled a few holes in my CF mast much lower down, where, presumably, holes are a greater risk. I did so after consulting with an engineer at a company that makes CF masts. I think we are all, understandably, far too concerned about drilling a few holes in the mast. I wouldn’t hesitate to drill one or two at the top, so long as they were appropriately spaced.

You can also help alleviate some of the fear of the hole if you fill
it with an epoxy when you’re setting your screws.
If you are really afraid of putting holes in your mast that high
up, you can borrow a technique from the Nonsuches.
Make a vertical mounting plate for your light, then use two
long ‘hose clamp’ style bands to go around the mast and the plate.
Pass the bands between the sail track and the mast, and tighten
until the light doesn’t move. Trim off the excess clamping material.

I made a small pedestal from two U-shaped aluminum plates and mounted
the tricolor on top of that, just above the steaming light.
I’ve also seen tricolor lights sold with a piece of tube to mount them
on.

I have a masthead tri color/strobe/anchor light on my Hoyt32. My steaming light is located below the upper jibstay fitting about 1/3 of the way down. It’ a standard Aqua-Signal steaming/decklight combo unit fastened to the front of the mast by what looks like four 1/8" aluminum pop rivets. The four 1/8" holes pose no problem, and show no signs of cracks., or any other problems that a CF guy could determine. If you want me to send you a pic direct, let me know. I have a setup very similar to Paul McFadden’s on my Hoyt F32. The
tricolor/strobe is mounted on a three sided stainless steel sheet
metal piece with ears on the bottom for attaching to the top of the
mast. This allows some space for the wires coming out of the mast and
also for the mounting of my wind speed/direction sensor. I removed the
steaming light from the top of the mast and had it replaced by an Aqua
Signal combined steaming/deck light that was pop riveted by Freedom to
the mast (I think just above the fore stay) when I had it there for
some post hurricane Hugo work. I guess its not a problem if they
agreed to install it.
