mast mounted radar

For Ketch 22 and Bright Star and any others with mast mounted radar -
Source of your mast mounts. Also, how do you handle cable that leads
from antenna to display down below. If in the mast, how is hole
handled. If out of mast, how to you secure cable and protect it from
elements? Also any tips on installation of display. Where is it
mounted and can you see it from behind the wheel? Thanks for your
help. Sally and David

The radar was installed when I bought Ketch 22.The original radar was a Vigil.
I have since replaced
the radar antenna and electronics with a Furuno. Smaller, lighter, cheaper,
more powerful etc. The
mast mount is aluminum, and is riveted to the mast. I fabricated a small
adapter to allow the Furuno
to use the same mast mount as the original Vigil.

The multi wire antenna cable is routed inside the mast via a small hole drilled
in the mast at the antenna
and a second hole in the mast near the base (in the bilge).

The display is on a swing mount that allows it to be stowed out of the way when
not in use. When
in use, the swing mount allows the helmsman to see the display from the helm.
The swing mount is
bolted to the starboard companionway bulkhead.

Bright Star’s also got a Furuno unit, but instead of the mount being
riveted to the mast, it uses two compression-clamp stainless pieces
(see pics in Files/Radar mount). The pieces are (or were - see the
other thread on Radar Mounts) bedded to the mast. Wire is internal
like Ketch22’s, coming out at the base of the mast.

Display in Bright Star is off-center left fixed mount on the Nav
Station, with a Garmin 2010 GPS right next to it. Displays for both
are large enough that a quick duck to port of the wheel to look down
the companionway allows helm to read the displays.
