I’m in the process of installing a Raymarine C-70 Chartplotter and
Radar on my 1981 Freedom 40 Cat-Ketch. I’m just wondering what to
expect when I replace the existing Furuno Radome with the Raymarine
radome. Is it a simple matter of attaching the new radome wire to the
old, and then pull out the old causing the new wire to follow the old
through the mast? Or, is it more complicated than that? Any advice
would be greatly appreciated.
Jay,
If you are lucky, it’s that simple. In my mast, all the wiring is
fed through a foam tube like they use to insulate central heating
pipes. I’m almost certain I cannot simply pull a new wire in with
the old one. Another issue might be the use of tie-wraps, if these
are pulled really tight, you will have tough time getting a wire
through. Maybe if you could connect the old and the new wire head
tot head with ducttape, without a bulge (so without connectors) you
could get it through.

A couple years ago I replaced a Vigil radar system with a new Furuno.
As you suggested, I simply pulled the new cable thru the mast using
the old Vigil. At the mast mount for the radome, I had to fashion an
adaptor plate because the Furuno holes didn’t math the existing mount
very well.
By the way, was that you aboard Fantasy that I saw sailing the “slot”
on Sunday the 29th? I saw what was clearly a cat ketch leaving
Richardson Bay from the Sausilito area, heading for the main bay.
Great day.

Michel & Tom,
Thanks for the information on radar mast wiring. I hope it goes smoothly. No Tom, that wasn’t me sailing the “slot”. Must be another Freedom. I presently live aboard in the Antioch Marina, but will be on the bay in a couple of months. Maybe I’ll see you then.

As a guy who bicycles with women who leave him behind on the hills, skis with women who lose him on the bumps, and who has a close female friend who wants to buy a boat and take it around Cape Horn–no kidding–I find nothing about that in the least curious…especially the great taste in boats!

The previous owner of my F-40 Fantasy replaced the main mast with a used mast from Tom Wylie, of Wylie Yachts. The new mast is the same diameter, but a few feet taller.

Ketch 22 came with the bracket already installed. It is attached to
the mast with rivets, which being around this web site, you’ll know is
not recommended. Having said that, Ketch 22 has made several open
ocean crossings without any distress. The crossings include several
from Galveston to Mexico (previous owner), and Galveston to Ft Myers
Beach as well as SF to HI (and back). I do have the running backstays
attached (for the staysail) which undoubtedly helps reduce some of the
mizzen mast stress.
I can send pictures, or you can look for yourself if interested. I
keep Ketch 22 at the Oakland YC.
Is your new 39 an Express? Is it a local boat? What’s the name?
