MAX Prop on a Freedom 35

Posted by reedjayt2004 (reedjayt@…>)

This last spring I replaced the strut bearing on my 1994 Freedom 35.
Since the prop needed to be removed, I took the opportunity to have it
serviced. ( They cleaned and regreased all the internal parts, instead
of just topping off the grease in the zerts) On a couple of trips
this spring, it seemed fine, but last weekend, I couldn’t get the
engine above 2,000 RMP and the speed seemed to be a lower than normal
speed over water.

I was wondering if anyone else has a MAX prop on a Freedom and knows
the settings they are using.

Thanks
Jay

Jay:

Big problems with prop barncles in Cheaspeake this spring. Our 2
blade could only get to 5 knots until we had a good hard sail. Friend
with Maxprop on Cal 39 overheated.

Thanks Fred. I’m thinking that may also be my problem. I’ve notice more
growth on my knotmeter paddle wheel since I moved the boat from the
Sassafrass down to Rock Hall.

Hi Jay, I had a similar problem after the boat (F35) sat for a while. I
couldn’t get the RPM up and boat speed was low for the RPM’s I could get.
The problem was barnacles on the prop surface and in the gears of the max
prop. The prop would not fully deploy and when it did it was not
efficient. A bit of scraping and holding of breath and all was well.

If you are looking for the setting on the Max prop, call PYI. They will have a record of the original owner and the setting, and if you don’t know the name of the person purchasing the prop, tell them you have a 199x Freedom 35 with a 3GM30F and they will be able to look up the boat and the suggested setting.
