Hi,

Thanks for the ideas on Goo-Gone, Oops and denatured alcohol. I’m
stopping by the hardware store on my way to the lake for those items.

One more thing. When I pull the starter rope on my old
Evenrude, it comes out okay, but doesn’t go back in all the way or
when it does, it moves slowly. Is there a simple fix for this?

Allen,

I’ve seen similar problems – even on lawn mowers. Chances are, the
flat steel rewind spring (similar to the rewind spring in a tape
measure) is rusty or is binding.

As an initial quick fix, try spraying, if you can find an opening,
with WD-40 or equiv. Otherwise, you’ll need to take the recoil
starter assembly off and disassemble it. A “parts manual” that
contains exploded diagrams for your engine would help. Depending upon
how technical you are, you may want to leave this to a shop.

Allen,

Often times the spring steel becomes fatigued or the plastic catch levers
inside the pull start cartridge become misaligned.

Based on my experiences with trying to rebuild these things on numerous lawn
mowers, it is worth your while to just purchase a whole new cartridge as I
have learned. The cassettes can be rebuilt, but that opens up a whole new
set of worms. If we were made with four hands rather than just two, it
would not be a problem.

The spring steel usually ends up jumping out of the containment disk like
snakes out of a can more times than not, the plastic catch leavers fall out
or become miss-aligned as you turn over the cassette to screw it back on.
And the best part, with my luck at least, the rope breaks after I DO get the
cassette lined up and screwed back on leaving me with only having to take
the whole thing apart again.

It’s a beautiful comedy of errors if you’re into that kind of thing.

Thanks, John. I’ll try the WD-40 fix. I’ll take the cover off the
motor and look around. If that doesn’t do the job I’ll take the motor
to a local motor fixer guy and let him work his magic. This old
Evenrude came with the boat and is at least 30-years old. I’ve had it
services with the last two years, and it always starts.

You’ve managed to capture the scene correctly! I usually dread
tackling these sorts of issues and I believe my last one was a tape
measure.

So generally, you only attempt this sort of thing once! (and have
somebody nearby video taping the entire process to send to AFV).

IF only we did video tape our misfortunes trying to put these things back
on, we’d all have at least $1000.00 or more from AFV.

$1000.00 would buy you and your family for generations an endless supply of
tape measures (or retracting pull start cassettes).
