Sadly, my “Eluthera” is on the hard for the season, but I have a
potential problem. I stopped to top off the tank at the local marina
and the attendant overfilled my tank, just ever so slightly. But it
has occurred to me that in the past, I have had a problem with diesel
leaking into the bilge. I have not completely filled the tank this
year and the problem seems to have gone away. I fear that the diesel
in the fill line might cause the diesel problem to occur again. Should
I make an effort to remove some diesel? If so, what might be the best

I would remove some, if for no other reason than come spring and warmer temperatures, the fuel will expand and come out the vent and stain the hull (ask me how I know that). You could remove some by detaching the fuel line from the primary filter or by removing the plywood over the tank and taking off the clean-out and remove from there.

Of course, no overfill should end up in the bildge…so something is leaking. We had a problem with the clean-out port leaking (the 4 inch pipethread fitting at the starboard front corner of the top of the tank. When we filled the tank up to the deck fitting, then the pressure would force a small ooze of fuel out of the clean-out. Other places can also leak under this pressure, and the filler hose itself may be cracked and leaking. It is very important to tack down the leak and get is fixed. But, as a general rule, I would never leave the boat with the tank pressurized by a full fill hose. Our proceedure was to fill it up, then use the engine for about an hour. Alternatively, don’t fill it up all the way. We also added a new check valve to the overflow/vent port line that exits the upper port side of the transom.
