need some info re evaluating

Posted by carlinmaine (carl47@…>)

Tomorrow going to look at 21 that is on a mooring and is available for
sale by owner who owned it for about a year before upgrading to a 30’
boat to accomodate the wishes of his new honey. It has a shoal keel, a
desired feature for me, but when I asked about the gunmount spinnaker,
he said it didn’t have one, but does have a spinnaker and spinnaker
pole, which he never used. I’m guessing it may be the gunmount, but
won’t know until I see the boat. That’s the problem - I’ve never seen
one myself, other than the photos on this site. The price asked is
good, although it is sans trailer, but does have an outboard.

Will welcome any suggestions for things I should look for on this first
lookover, since I’ll need to have it pulled out of the water for a
final look. Especially interested in knowing what to look for re the
gunmount spinnaker. Also interested in what hardware I should expect to
be present and where to check for lamination issues.

Thanks in advance - this forum has been very useful!

The biggest problem I had with my shoal draft was the tabernacle mast. The aluminum sleeves where worn out and mast was loose. You could actually see it rocking back and forth with the movement of the boat. So check if the mast is snug. Mine is now permanently fixed with epoxy ( one piece mast ). Otherwise look out for the same things as any other boats.

Carl,

On the very first “page” of the freedom-21 web site–where there is
the photo of Blue Merle–you’ll see a topic entitled “Photo
Gallery”. Inside the gallery click on Blue Raven. There are some
good, close up photos of what the gun mount hardware looks like
(when it’s owned and cared for by a person who obviously knows what
they’re doing.)Also, in the commissioning instructions, which are
viewable by clicking on the bullet point “Documentation” you’ll see
verbal and schematic instructions describing the appropriate
hardware and location. Hope it helps.

The one tip I can give is to look at where the deck hardware
fasteners are bolted inside the cabin and see if there is any
evidence of brown staining around the barrel nuts. Apparently,
there is some incidence of core wetting that can occur–most often
around the traveler track fasteners.
