Neuse River Sail Folks

Posted by allenmcclung (amcclung@…>)

I can’t find the original message from the folks who were looking for
information about sailing the Neuse River, hear the Outer Banks. I
finally heard from my friend who lives (on a boat) there. Here’s her
response.

"Hi,

I received your message, via Carol & OD. Sorry I
didn’t get back to you before, but I lost your e-mail
address.

Sailing the Albemarle can be a challenge at times, but
nothing to be afraid of. It should, however, be
respected. I have had some great sails through there.
It is only 15 to 20 miles in distance, and the better
way to go South. Otherwise, you have to deal with
Hatteras, and that can be a real chore.

The Dismal Swamp is really pretty in the fall. There
is a Welcome Center there where you can tie up at no
charge.

The Alligator River Bridge will not open if wind is 30
or higher. There is a marina on the right, just
before you get to the bridge - (sort of a convenience
store/grill) - where you can stay for a few days, or
just stop for fuel and a meal.

At the foot of the Alligator River, just before you go
into the ICW, there is a really pretty anchorage.
It’s worth an evening layover. I’ve been told there
is a new marina in Belhaven, farther up than River
Forest Manor. Have been told, but don’t know from
experience, that River Forest is not what it used to
be.
