New 28CK User

HI, I purchased my 1983 28CK "Wings"mid 2014. I sail Neuse River and Pamlico Sound in NC and lie near New Bern NC. I will attach pics when I get them correctly sized. Been following this blog for about a year and very much like all the comments and posts.

Welcome to the group. I purchased Raven (28CK WB) in 2010 and spent 2 years refitting her. So if you are attempting any projects, repairs or upgrades PM me. I have most likely been there. This forum is a great resource for Freedom info.

Congratulations,

My 28 CK Clave’ and I have been together 2 years this month. My Brothers had it in sailing condition when they gave it to me. So I have had fun sailing. We are glad lots of others know their boats more intimately here and can share their experience. Raven knows his freedom 28ck better than most.

Pictures are always good. Share your experiences.

HI, Thanks for the posts. still trying to get a photo small enough for this site. I like to know Captain’s first names along with boat names. I plan on being in Tampa area with Wings and interested more on the Jan event for old boats. Also would like to know morw about what you have done to upgrades, engine/prop sizes etc. I am not a daily visitor to this site as when I go sailing, email stays at home…

Congratulations on thoughts of the St Petersburg classic boat regatta. It is an event the St Petersburg Yacht Club in conjunction with the St Petersburg sailing squadron. It is a benefit for the local meals on wheels. My brother is rebuilding a freedom 40 I was going to race with him but his project is a bit behind schedule. It currently has the engine out. Has completely stripped interior and rebuilding is progressing. I encouraged him to race without the engine. Freedom number 1 did well in that mode. He wasnt so inclined.

Best upgrade my boat : tides marine sail slide system.

Best planned change: stack pack or similar sail cover.

Probably beneficial 3 blade or larger propeller.

Clearly undesirable: barnacles on your propeller

COME ON Man… lets See if This Photo is down to a usable size… Not sure why Geoff made this so difficult if the file is under 256kb Its a sailboat and most sailboats don’t fit into a SQUARE pic. “The image must be at least 0 pixels wide, 0 pixels high and at most 1024 pixels wide and 1024 pixels high. The submitted image is 1031 pixels wide and 1330 pixels high.” (197kb) so now I have to cut top out…to satisiify vertical pixel

OK I used Photobucket and resized. Think this is much better…

love the photos, Distinctive sails.
It was worth your effort, for me.
Thanks for sharing

Hi, for me the Freedom 33 and 28 ketches are the best looking Freedoms. They look like a cruising boat should.
cheers Dale.

Dear All,

I am new on this site (Dutchman, living/working in Switzerland)
reason, I bot a 28ck 1983 in the UK, Eastbourne last week
planning to silo her to the Netherlands within few months
and looking forward to read/learn much from my fellow Freedom lovers

Welcome, Where will you sail it in Switzerland?

Jacques, enjoy your Freedom 30(28) cat ketch.

Raven did a major rebuild of his. Knows it well.

My brother put a new yanmar diesel in mine last year.
This year a new electric panel.
We mostly day sail the Florida west coast.

Post pictures of your boat when you pick it up.

Hello Jacques, and welcome to the forum. If you are living in Switzerland, keeping the boat in the Netherlands is a good bet. Great group of Freedom owners there. They have a fantastic annual gathering. Hans posted pics of the latest edition (Sep '18) on the site. Where in the UK are you currently? I think I’m just up the coast from you, in Lowestoft, Suffolk.

I’ve been posting quite a few threads about my 28 CK, Hull #4. Wondering if any of you, if you get the opportunity, would be willing to email some photos of your decks and cabin top? The previous owner went absolutely bonkers with his drill, and there are lines, blocks, and fairleads covering every inch of the deck. Since they’re all different brands (and not all stainless fasteners) I’m certain they aren’t stock. If you pm me, I’ll respond with my gmail address so we don’t give up too much to the spammers.

Many thanks~Jeff

Hi Jeff
My coachroof no longer looks like the original arrangement. It’s now covered in solar pannels. However, originally, it had 3 fairleads on either side of the forward hatch, to direct the control lines from the main mast, and two 4-sheave organisers aft, close to the clutches. Aditionally, there was the lift line for the keel, which came though the cabin on an ss tube, and across the cabin roof diagonally to the winch on the stbd side. I absolutely hated that setup, so I installed an electric winch inside the cabin to lift and lower the keel. Will try to find a few old pics to show, but is you look for a thread here on the rigging schedule of these boats, you’ll have diagrams of all the position of all the hw on the coachroof.
Cheers
Rafa

Awesome. I’m planning on doing two panels, 42"x19" on either side of the centerline.

I’m going to take a few photos next time I’m out at the boat, and I’ll post them for critique. On the port side of your companionway, is there a stainless ‘riser’ with stoppers and camcleats? Can’t tell if mine is stock or not…

Jeff, for what is worth, I would not be too wedded to the original arrengement. Do your own thing according to your sailing habits. E.g. I sail single handed. One winch at starboard only was not sufficient. Needed one on either side also. Redirected the lines from the main mast to allow for solar pannels. Installed preventers on both booms, not considered in the original schedule but needed with fat roachy sails. Might also consider running the control lines so that the reefing lines lay on the same side as the halyard for that sail. With my rig (G10) I need to have hold of both when reefing, so that the sail does not spill out of the boom on any breeze. Etc,etc. Probably trial and error is best way to figure a good arrangement for you.
Cheers
