We need a new primary anchor for our 40/40 with electric windlass. We
have a secondar 20lb Danforth. Any recommendation? Mainly to be used
around Chesapeake. Recommendations on chain/rode length would also be
appreciated.

I have been using a Bruce. Currently on the Chesapeake, anchoring out for one full season and nearly every weekend the following two years. Often rafting and when doing so always am asked to set an anchor.
Anchoring is all about angles and scope is the way to get a rode angel under 10 deg at the shank of the anchor. Chain, especially in shallow water does very little good because there is not enough weight in short rodes to create much centenary.
this is from a guy that carries two rodes rigged, with 230 and 240 ft of chain respectively, backed by 350 nylon both But that is intended for coral.

Lots of sailors use cqrs, I’d throw it away, seen too many boats drag on
rock bottom, danforths don’t reset sometimes when the wind shifts, I used to
use a delta, it has excellent holding power and always resets, the bruces
work too, but don’t have as much holding power pound for pound as a delta, I
have actually tested them real world. For primary I would use a sixty or a
minimum 44 lb delta for anchoring, 35 pound delta for a secondary or a
bruce, actually I would go for a 44 lb claw anchor instead of a bruce it’s a
knockoff made by simpson lawrence. I’ve had two boats run aground on with
danforths, will never use them for mooring again. As far as chain, I’d use
3/8s galvanized chain about 70 feet and 3/4 inch nylon anchor line, that’s
just my preference, many sailors have different preferences, as far as rope
and chain, but the delta anchor is the most reliable around, I know a lot of
charter captains that have switched to deltas and threw away cqrs, in fact I
was given a cqr for that reason and ended up giving it away myself.

My son has a CQR and Spade on his PDQ42. I’ve seen his
primary, the CQR, fail about a dozen times, then when
we go to the much lighter Spade, have the boat
immediately grab and hold. This mostly on sand but at
least three times on mud. Both anchors have 50 ft. of
3/8ths chain and 250 ft. 3/4ths nylon twist. The Spade
is 33 lbs., the CQR is 45 lbs. I’ve been amazed by the
Spade. Pricey, though.

The last few years, there have been anchor tests in several US,
German, Dutch, and other sailing magazines. The Spade anchor always
comes out best, followed by the Delta. The Bruce performs fairly,
provided that it’s 15% heavier than the weight you get from the
tables. The CQR was the best choice 25 years ago, but now it has
been surpassed by the newer design anchors. Anyway, I’m replacing my
CQR with a Spade.
If you have an electric windlass, do yourself a favor and take an
anchor that’s one weightclass heavier.
anyway, my 2 cents.

You might want to consider a Bruce, with all (?) chain. I used a 44lb Bruce with 400’ 3/8" BBB chain on my last boat. I logged about 12,000 mi. with it, anchoring in all types of bottoms from Canada to Central America and the Caribbean. It performed flawlessly. Consider all chain because it keeps the boat quiet at anchor, and you have to use about half the scope. If you’re racing, forget all I just wrote and but a Fortress, 40 ft of 5/16" hi-test chain and a good length of nylon rode.
