Like the color choice? LOL Hi, and thanks for welcoming me into your (our) group. I’m enthusiastically looking forward to learning more about my boat, and how I can improve it. I was given a Freedom 21, that had a broken mast. It seems the previous owner raced another style boat, and was attempting to use the freedoms mast on his 24 ft boat, and obviously, it exceded the limits…so, it broke right at the deck level. I would appreciate any help in doing so. I have bought a roll of carbon fiber, 3" wide
and 100’ long, as well as a roll of fiberglass. I was thinking about using a cardboard insert from a carpet roll, as an insert, to help align the two parts. then, simply wrap the fiberglass a few wraps, maybe half the thickness of the mast, and then finish with carbon fiber…once I reach the same thickness, I would run strips lengthwise, perhaps 18" or 24" past center each way, then wrap it in mutiple directions to give it unidirectional strength… I hear that there is a product to make my own boot, a type of material, I assume like a silicone, that would allow for the additional thickness added to the diameter of the mast. I’m thinking about an additional maybe 1/4 " (1/2" overall) should be sufficient…what do you all think? I would love to hear from someone
with experience in carbon fiber, and especially if you’ve had to repair your own mast. Engineers input would be very welcome as well…what do you think of my plan to repair it…also…cracks…my mast has fine cracks if you will in the outer coat (maybe gelcoat) of the mast…basically the entire length. they run around the mast, to me it looks like the mast was bent past the norm, I’m sure when it broke, and perhaps they develpoed then, or they are just from sun and age…Should I massage a coat of epoxy into them, just to fill them and maybe keep out the weather and discourage future and further damage? I sail on a relatively small lake…winds rarely over about 20-25mph…and usually 15 and below…but then again, I wouldn’t mind trailering it elsewhere,
maybe even Lake Michigan… I live in Central Illinois…and would especially love to hear from anyone close who might invite me to go sailing so that I might learn more about her. Her name is currently…‘Jessica Hope’ and originally was in Florida (1984-approx 1996) and then North Carolina (1996-2003)… She is veray basically equiped. The windows seem weird to me…they have a one piece tinted plexiglass cover about 6 ft long by 12" at the front and 8" aft…the smaller openings can be seen through the glass. I’m not sure if this is a factory option, or was
added… I love the pictures of some of your boats. I like to race, but like to cruise, so I think I’ll find a happy medium. I love the guys boat from the Washington…Blue Raven…I believe…WOW, love the thought of all those possabilities…and appreciate that he gave so much information so that a guys can find the parts if he was so inclined…like that awesome anchor on the bow…and the swing out navigation station…(GPS maybe ?) can’t wait to look at more boats in the coming days… I’ll be building a trailer also…I’m starting with a single axle trailer from a
Rinker 21 ft runabout…so any help as to where to find trailer parts will be helpful as well… Ok…enough for my first email…Love the Freedom 21… Harry “Hammer” Jackson jandj44@…

I can’t comment on your plans to
repair the broken mast (I simply don’t know how to repair it), but I can
tell you that the horizontal ”cracks” you see on the mast are
pretty normal.
Apparently the masts are “painted”
with an epoxy coating and it is this superficial coating that has cracked, not
the fibre underneath it. The epoxy is less flexible than the fibre structure,
and since the mast is intended to bend as the wind picks up (to shed load) the epoxy
coating develops cracks.
My mast and several other F21 masts had similar
cracks.
