New F-30 Owner

Posted by ajlorman (ajlorman@…>)

Fellow Freedom owners:

I closed yesterday on F-30 hull number 70 and she’ll be delivered to
my slip tomorrow. This list and the archives have been enormously
helpful to me, and now I’m going to repay that good deed by becoming
a pain in the a-- with lots of questions. My first five:

  1. Has anyone retrofitted a F-30 with a Racor filter? If so, where
    did you locate it?

  2. Has anyone ordered a bimini from The Canvas Store? Their mail
order price is pretty good, but they obviously make them from stock
measurements, so I have no idea as to how they look, fit, etc.

  3. I’m planning on buying a Raymarine ST4000+ wheel pilot. If
anyone has installed one, are there any special tricks or problems to
    know about?

  4. The acrylic pane in the forward hatch is broken. Bomar will sell
me a new one for $90. Any idea whether it would be less expensive to
get a local plastic shop to cut it out for me?

  5. My boat will be on the South River on the Chesapeake, just south
of Annapolis. Any F-30 owners in the neighborhood who might be
interested in sharing with me the tricks to sailing this rig? (My
last boat was a Sabre 32.)

Many thanks. I look forward to participating in the group amd
getting to know you electronically.

Congratulations!! I own hull F30-69.

The racor is mounted to a bracket that is welded to my fuel tank. I have a custom bimini. the 4000 can be a pain look at the simrad? i have the 4000 and it is a good unit. I had a hatch part made up would have been faster to just buy it.

Welcome! We have f30 #77

Look for the racor under the aft berth at the fuel tank. Most people
I know use (and really like) Steve Thurston 401 254-0970, for canvas
work though I am not sure he will work “by mail”, we have an old belt
drive Raymarine autopilot and would look at the simrad if upgrading
so as to not have to figure out where to put the compass of the 4000,
how much of the hatch is broken? if the boat does not have a fan
ventilator you might want to seriously consider a Nicro powervent
3000 as the 30 gets stuffy without one.

You have made a fine choice, ask away… and if you ever visit New
England let us know.

Thanks, TJ and David.

I do have a fuel filter in the same location as you both do, but mine is not a Racor turbine type and I’m not sure there’s enough room for one there.

Both of you have suggested looking at the Simrad wheelpilot. I go back and forth. I’m attracted to the ease of installation v. the Raymarine. On the other hand, it is a big unit which seems to take a lot of space. Unfortunately, Practical Sailor has never compared the two (they did compare the tiller pilots). And English sailing magazine did compare them (not as thoroughly as PS would have) and concluded that the Raymarine took much longer to install but actually worked a bit better. Also, they said the helmsman could catch his fingers between the wheel and the Simrad unit.

The acrylic is beyond repair. A previous owner installed a Nicro 2000 vent and I think that weakened the acrylic enough so that it cracked from corner to center. I guess I’ll order the $90 Bomar replacement. (I passed on their offer of a $25 tube of caulking to install it; GE caulk made for installing hatches is $8 by mail.)

Does anyone know where to get a replacement for the plastic portion of the engine vented loop that comes up through the storage box under the top cabin step? Mine is cracked and it would be a heck of a job to have to replace the entire loop.

By the way, I had previously posted a query about draft, noting that I had measured two Freedom 30s said to be 4 1/2 ft draft and found both to be about 5 ft. I measured mine again before it was launched and it was 5’2" or 5’3", depending on where you measure from. A few of you have noted that you, too, have 5’ draft. Does anyone actually have a measured 4 1/2 ft draft?

I recall reading a post in the archives about a F-30 owner who had Garhauer make a mast ring to mount a rigid boom vang. I called Garhauer and they don’t recall making a rigid vang for a Freedom 30. If the person who has the Garhauer would contact me off-linbe, I would appreciate it.

Finally, I also noted in the archives that a few years ago someone said they were trying to start an on-line arhcive of F-30 materials and had collected a lot of material to do so. Did anything ever come of that project?

Many thanks.

I was very surprised to find my F30
(#62) has a 5.5 foot draft rather than the published 4.5 feet.
Has anyone checked the mast height? It is
supposed to be 50 fet but I’m wondering…
Lovely boat, I routinely sail solo up and
down the Maine coast with the aid of autopilot and GPS.

Fellow Freedom owners:

I closed yesterday on F-30 hull number 70 and
she’ll be delivered
to
my slip tomorrow. This list and the
archives have been enormously
helpful to me, and now I’m going to repay
that good deed by
becoming
a pain in the a-- with lots of
questions. My first five:

  1. Has anyone retrofitted a F-30 with a
    Racor filter? If so,
    where
    did you locate it?

  2. Has anyone ordered a bimini from The
    Canvas Store? Their mail
order price is pretty good, but they
    obviously make them from stock
measurements, so I have no idea as to how
    they look, fit, etc.

  3. I’m planning on buying a Raymarine
    ST4000+ wheel pilot. If
anyone has installed one, are there any
    special tricks or problems
    to
    know about?

  4. The acrylic pane in the forward
    hatch is broken. Bomar will
    sell
me a new one for $90. Any idea whether
    it would be less expensive
    to
get a local plastic shop to cut it out for
    me?

  5. My boat will be on the South River
    on the Chesapeake, just
    south
of Annapolis. Any F-30 owners in the
    neighborhood who might be
interested in sharing with me the tricks to
    sailing this rig? (My
last boat was a Sabre 32.)

Many thanks. I look forward to
participating in the group amd
getting to know you electronically.
