Ahoy mates, I have recently purchased a Freedom 21, berthed at San
Francisco Marina Green Harbor. The boat is in excellent condition
except for two small items I could use advice on. The levers on
three of my easylock rope clutches are broken, and local West Marine
no help. The other item involves the sail track that has the bottom
eight rivets missing. Are they aluminum or monel should I use
adhesive sealant, any cautions regarding carbon. Finally I will be
using my Freedom only once a month and would offer a very reasonable
charter to any Freedom owners visiting San Francisco. Fair winds.

Concerning clutch handles. Three years ago I received excellent
service from Scott Symth at The Chandlery in Ottawa. His email
address is <chandlery@…>. My memory is not great, but I
think the cost for 8 handles was about $60 US. – John

P,
I’ve got one new easylock lever that I’ll be happy to send you if we
can try to go for a sail if I’m ever in S.F. in the near future. I
might be able to find another.
I replaced all my Easylock handles on our 1985 F-21 once and after
that, replaced the clutches with wonderful new Lewmar models. That
required filling the Easylock mounting and redrilling, but it was
worth it.
We sail several times a month on Galveston Bay.

Thanks for the reply on the easylock clutch handles, found them on the internet, still waiting to hear advice on replacing sail track rivets. Would love to take you for a sail , the boat is in the marina green San Francisco, close to Golden Gate and St Francis clubs, and of course lots of wind. Peter.tomay_97 <howzeb@…> wrote:

I was in town recently and saw her at the pier. I sail a 1983 F21
out of Waquoit Bay on Cape Cod. Always interested in meeting other
Freedom sailors.

Hi Peter,
ALthough we have had a Freedom 28 since 2997, I did own a 21 from 84-
97. We did have problems with the rivets at the bottom of the mast
track. Mark Edwards at Freedom supplied us with a bag of replacement
aluminum rivets. The problem was finding a rivet gun with a nose
narrow enough to fit inside the sail track. The only thing you need
to be sure of is that the rivets have sufficient grip length. The
lower part of the mast is fairly thick.

Re Easylock, go ahead and replace them. I had the same problem and
bought slightly different ones that did fit.
Sold my F21 sadly. Great boat.

Have you had any luck on finding replacement levers for your easylock
rope clutches? I purchased my Freedom 21 #104 from Dr. Kent
Anderson in Escanaba MI. last April and I am now racing Sara J. (soon
to be renamed WindRush) at Elepahant Butte NM with the Rio Grande
Sailing Club (RGSC). My levers are still good but it would be nice
to know where to get replacements when, and they will, fail.
