New Freedom 21 Owner

Posted by keithmaryq (keithmaryq@…>)

My son recently acquired a Freedom 21 that apparently hasn’t been
sailed for a while. We have zero experience with keel boats (I sail
a Flying Scot) and are going to learn on this one…if we can get it
sea worthy without breaking the bank.

Actually, the hull seems to be in pretty good shape. We found some
old registration cards in the cabin that indicate it used to belong
to someone living in Georgia…the cards say the hull ID is
TSP2125M84H. Based on this, can anyone tell us when it was built,
and the hull number?

Although it needs plenty of work, our biggest concern is the lack of
a mast. We have the bottom portion of the mast up to just above the
goose neck…it appears it was sheared off somehow. We do have an
alluminum mast that could possibly be sleeved into what is left of
the carbon-fiber mast…but we haven’t really explored this option
and we really don’t know if this is at all feasable. Does anyone
know the specs for the original mast so we can determine if what we
have will work…or better yet does anyone know of an inexpensive
alternative to buying a new carbon fiber mast?

We haven’t had it long, but at this point we can also tell it’s
missing the spin pole and gun mount, the spinnaker and associated
rigging, and all other rigging too.

We look forward to exchanging information via this forum and
appreciate those who contribute to it. We would really like any
information on used parts, sources for the same, and Freedom 21
restoration nuances.

Freedom 21 HINs Numbers are found on the upper right corner of
transom)
EXAMPLE my HIN: TSP21295M84J
TSP STANDS FOR TILLOTSON-PEARSON
21295 STANDS FOR F-21, HULL NUMBER 295
M STANDS FOR MARCH
84 STANDS FOR 1984)
J STANDS FOR THE MODEL YEAR

Looks like you are missing a number. If yours was built in 1984 I
would think it was in the 200s. So look at the Hin on the boat to
get the correct number.

Keith. you have a lot of work ahead of you. I don’t know of anybody that has retrofitted an aluminum mast for the Freedom 21. Having a new carbon mast made would cost over 3,ooo bucks. I have seen other boats with a variety of masts .You might even be able to fit a flying scot or a Hobie 18 mast. Of coarse you would then need shrouds and possibly a backstay.Hopefully someone in our group could help. Help!!! Hi Guys,

I have a write-up of my UK built F21’s aluminium (aluminum to you guys) mast on our site - pls take a look. I have determined that this is a standard French spin-tapered flagpole and I have contacted the UK representatives for this company to ask how one might get such an extrusion in the USA - hopefully they will be getting back to me? First think though take a look at my article on our site.

Cheers,

Wilf Bishop

Hi Keith,

I’m still here and I am still maintaining this forum and the Freedom
21 Web site at http://www.freedom21.info. Although I did sell my
boat, I am still a big fan of Freedom 21s.

The reason that I sold my Freedom 21 was that the vehicle that I used
to tow the boat was totaled in an accident. No one was hurt, but I
lost my towing vehicle. I couldn’t afford docking fees or belonging
to a yacht club, so I was stuck with a boat that I had refurbised,
but could take anywhere.

I still read every message and I am particularly interested in
hearing about members who sail their boats long distances such as our
friend who plans to sail his boat to Hawaii.

A request just came in to have another Freedom 21 added to the map on
the Freedom 21 site. I will update the map in a few minutes.

The Freedom.info site costs me money to maintain which is offset by
visitors clicking on Adsense advertisements and by visiters
purchasing products through the West Marine link and the Max’s
sailing store link. As long as visitors click on the ads and buy
products through the site, I will maintain it. That seems like a
small price to pay to have the site online available for publishing
new content like Wilfred’s wonderful articles.

Sincerely,

Max
