I just joined this site. I live in Ontario and am considering buying a freedom 21. I have some concerns: 1) how difficult is it to raise or lower the mast for transporting the boat? 2) where would be a good place to find blueprints for making a trailer for it? 3) do any owners use the 21 in a trailer sailer mode, or ought I look for some other boat? thanks, Bill

Hi Bill,
I have a Freedom 21 sitting on a trailer. You are welcome to come
see the trailer if it would help. My f21 was purchased in Ohio and
I towed it home with a Mercury Sable sedan. Based on my experience,
this is the smalled vehicle one should use for towing an f21.
Balancing the weight of the boat is essential. I had to leave the
outboard on the boat, move all heavy gear to aft to reduce the
tongue weight.
I have also read that some people have adapted other trailers to
carry f21s. However, you have to pay attention to the type of keel
the f21 comes with. Some are larger than others.
As I have not yet stepped my mast, I can’t answer your question
about raising and lowering the mast. However, I have read that it
is easy to do with the help of block and tackle used with supporting
poles.

I would look for another type of boat. I have the shoal draft model with the non-hinged mast. It takes 3 to 4 guys to take the mast down and up. Plus the pole system is cumbersome at best. The deep draft would be worse. They did make a hinge arrangement but very hard and expensive to retrofit. Good luck. bill hoogland <underwood1317@…> wrote: I just joined this site. Bill,
Don’t get talked out of an F21 so easy. What is great about these
boats is that they are easy to sail, roomy below deck, and that they
are transportable by trailer.
I’m convinced that the issue of stepping the mast is solvable. I’ll
write more about it as I learn.
