New Harken traveler on F28

Posted by sweeneyscrod (sweeneyscrod@…>)

I want to replace my old Harken traveler on my Mull F28-has anyone
done this?
Do the new Harken traveler cars and end controls fit on the old
tracks? I think the track I have is a CRX roller or a Big Boat CB?

I have a Mull 30 so I assume that our travelers are the same (Big Boat, but not CB). The new Harken cars, designated CB, do not fit the old track. You might be able to pick up a new old stock car on eBay. Or, for a very small investment, you can do what I did: replace the torlon ball bearings in the traveler car. The car rolled so freely after that that it was like having a new car. I also replaced the smaller ball bearings in the end controls.

If you contact Harken directly, they’ll supply an old style traveller
car. Occasionally a retailer will have them. Whether you replace the
ball bearings or the whole car, be sure you get ahold of a “loader” -
they keep the ballbearings from falling out and going all over the
place. If you get a new car, it should come with a loader.

Harken has a blue plastic tool that allows you to slide your car onto it so you can go to a safe place to reload the ball bearings. They will generally send you one free, at least thats what they do for me with my Impulse. The new cars do not need this loader since the technology different and the ball bearing will not fall out. I would try the ball bearing first the most economical route then if that does not work replace the car. A good cleaning with soapy water and new ball bearing may do the trick.
