It’s good to be a member of this group. I owned a Freedom 21 and
sailed her on Galveston Bay. That was several years ago. I now own
and sail a Helmes 25 on Lake Ouachita in central Arkansas.
Lately, I’ve been considering buying another Freedom 21. The one I
owned was the shoal draft model. I’m thinking about going to the deep
fin version this time. I’m sure there must be some difference between
the performance of both models. Does anyone out there have a good
comparison? I really liked the shoal draft, but hated giving up so
much windward performance. Is the deep draft significantly better?

Mike,
I can’t speak for a direct comparision
on the Freedom 21 but my guess is that you are probably going to see a 5 degree
improvement when pointing with a deep keel versus a shoal. Of course, your “velocity
made good” made deteriorate quickly when that keel gets stuck in the bottom

I grew up on a 1935 racing sloop that drew
close to five feet and we spent a few times sitting waiting for the tide to go
out and come back in! Maybe that’s why when I grew up I combined
performance and shoal draft and went with the multihull route—preferably one
that is small enough that you can push it.

Mike, I saw your E-mail and I welcome you to our group.You will find just about anything you need to know about a Freedom 21. If you do buy a Freedom,my advice would be to get the fin keel model.I can sail up wind with any boat on our lake.A catalina 22 owner sailed with me one day and remarked ( I wish my boat sailed as well as this boat).That made my day. Mike- I’ve got my Freedom 21 on Lake Maumelle west of Little Rock with a fin keel. If you want to come up sometime and go out and try one out let me know!
