Today I finished installing a new mooring for Lone Palm. I had been
using a friend’s mooring but he was comming back so I had to make my
own. I think it might have been a little overkill, but I figured that
I had the stuff, so I might as well do it as well as I could. Please
feel free to make any suggestions for improvement!
What I used was a 2000# forklift weight that had been sunken years
before. Through a hole in it I passed a 6’ length of 5/8" chain that
doubled back on itself. Shackled to the 5/8" is 8’ of 1/2" chain.
Shackled to the 1/2" chain is a swivel and spliced through the swivel
is an 8’ length of 1 1/4"
polypro that has another thimbled splice that the 5/8 3 strand nylon
bridle and small float are spliced to. The polypro has a length of
1/4 polypro that was woven counter to the lay to help prevent
unraveling when the line twists with the wind and tide. The water
is 5’ deep at mlt and there is a 3’ tide.
I’ve got a picture of the rig on a dock prior to installing that I’ll
try to post tomorrow.
Here’s what we require at Nyack Boat Club. We have about 15 feet of
water, with a tidal range of about … I don’t know, maybe 5 feet,
with a mud bottom. I’d put a swivel or two in the set-up.
We have #258 on a 150 pound mushroom, which is more than adequate.

Yes, but don’t you pull your mooring every winter and inspect it prior
to resetting it in the spring? Here in Miami we leave em in all year
long, year after year. The local wisdom is big chain lives in the
abrasive sandy bottom longer than smaller chain. Clearly, the initial
strength of 5/16 chain would be enough if it were not for the abrasion
issue.
Yes, we pull them and inspect before putting them back in.
