Hello fellow Freedom owners:

I’ve just purchased 1986 Freedom 36 “Bounder” and am glad to be
joining this list. Bounder will be renamed “Hard Earned” when she
is relaunched next spring. Unfortunately I have not had the
pleasure of sailing her yet as it did not make sense to step the
mast for two weeks at the end of the season here in Pananaram, MA on
Buzzards Bay.

Bill,
Welcome to the many Freedoms on Buzzards Bay! Padanarum is a fantastic place; every sail is a reach. Our Freedom 28 is in up Onset, from which every sail is a beat. Good luck finding a virgin for the renaming ceremony.

Bill-
Congratulations on your purchase. We recently completed our first season on our
F36/38 out of Mattapoisett. Great boat for a great area. We will also be
renaming in
the Spring. Now if my family can just settle on a single name from the four
possibilities…

Please explain what the Virgin is used for durring the renamming ceremony. I wnat to re-name (Christen?) my boat.

What are the steps in the ceremony?

Mark Johnson, Future Freedom or Ranger owner. (I knew Gary Mull)

Mark,
I found this explanation in my archives:

The Vessel’s old name must be removed from everything aboard including Logs, life saving equipment, documents etc. The vessel should then be prepped to “Bristol Fashion” . Prior to commissioning you will be required to purchase the bottle of “Champagne” or similarly expensive offering to “Neptune” (a fine expensive Scotch or bottle of Cognac will do nicely) Now here’s the trick I learned from an old salt on the north Atlantic…The christening must be done by a Virgin… that may be difficult in these times… the name must be pleasing to the god of the sea… I have followed this ritual and have had no ill luck with my boat. Capt. Haines warns that the ceremony must be strictly adhered to. As far as fiberglass boats not having any “soul” … you obviously haven’t been aboard mine, cause I can tell you, she can be a real bitch at times! GOOD LUCK

Also the note that:

The new owner can change the name with no bad luck as long he/she does so prior to the first launching under the new ownership.

Dave Evans, Present Freedom (28) owner and former Ranger (23) owner (never met Gary but wish I’d had the chance)
