Newport, RI Tradesmen Suggetions Needed

You’ll have to forgive me for asking a non-Freedom related question, but please give me some latitude. I just finished sailing my new Knysna 550 catamaran back to the Newport area from South Africa, and am in need of getting some work done. In my 27 years as an owner of a 40/40, I rarely had it in this area, so I’m not familiar with local tradesmen. The work will be done at the Newport Shipyard. Here’s who I need:

  • Painter. My longeron (the foredeck crossbeam) most likely needs to be removed, stripped, and repainted. When it was originally painted, they must have used the wrong primer, as it isn’t sticking to the aluminum, but the top-coat is sticking well to the primer.
  • Window/Glass person: I have long plexiglass windows along the side that are glued in and held in place with a glazing material…the wrong glazing material. They need to be removed and re-installed. I also have 2 hatches that need rebedding, as shown by the 2 solid days of rain.

Could your longeron have been mounted to your boat without isolating it from dissimilar metals? (No tef-gel on the stainless bolts)? That would cause what you are seeing super quick. Ask me how I know.

As for who to hire, I would ask Teak at 7star marine. His shop is more of a yacht oriented machine shop but he works with the best subcontractors. (Teak is his name).

If you need any help im 20 minutes a way and have a pickup truck.

The primer is peeling off of the longeron in large sheets. Sparcraft also made the mast and the boom, and there are no paint issue there, so clearly they did something different.

Yes i have a hunch the fasteners weren’t coated. On my last boat I installed a brand new Alado roller furler and did not remember to coat the bolts that held the aluminum drum together and in about 5 months all of the paint was gone. It fell off in sheets.
