Nibo (Bomar/Pompanette) hatches.

Posted by Herman and Gail Schiller (hschiller2@…>)

Folks,
I need help in removing the trapezoidal hatch cover on my Mull 28
(#29) so that I can send it to Select Plastics to have it
refurbished… I am unable (so far) to drive out the hinge pins with
any reasonable force. I found that the screws holding the hinge to
the hatch cover have permanently welded themselves to the aluminum
extrusion. Hence will not turn even with reasonably heavy impact
driver application. The lower part of the hinges seems to have two
screws, each, from under the hatch’s flange, so the removal of the
lower hinge leaf also is impossibly difficult.
As a last (?) resort, I have drilled small holes, radially, in each
portion of the hinge and have been feeding “Liquid Wrench” into these
holes today, with no success so far in budging the hinge pin.

Advice on any alternatives to what I’ve done so far will be greatly
appreciated.

If only these builders of equipment for boats would use medium
"Locktite"or “Neverseez” on the stainless steel threads before they
assemble them with aluminum components, life would be much
easier for those folks that have to disassemble things to effect repairs.

Herm:

If you are trying to remove it mainly to have the plastic lens replaced, the plastic is easy to remove and Bomar will gladly sell you a replacement, which is not especially difficult to install.

Herman,

I know what you’re going through, I’ve just removed all 12
stanchions plus the bases from my deck. The stanchion bases are
solid aluminum with three SS screwhead bolts through them. I had to
drill away the heads of most of them to get the stancion bases off.

What you could try is to heat the aluminum around the screws with a
paint remover or blowtorch. Watch out for plastic parts; they will
melt or burn. Go on with applying oil. If nothing works, you will
have to drill away the screwheads. Using a vice grip on the sides of
the screwheads will sometimes help if you can get to the head
properly.

Good luck.

michel

PS these socalled expert boatbuilders should be punished for
combining aluminum and SS parts without proper insulation. To make
them remove our bolts would be a good punishment. I sometimes wonder
if they thought that these boats would go to the scrapheap within 15
years; many solutions they used are far from future-proof.

Al,
Could you give me more detail about the “not especially difficult to install”
part? I need to replace the Lexan lenses in my Hood (Pomanette) hatches. I have
the Lexan. I do not know what to use to bond/seal them, nor am I sure of how to
go about it.

Tom:

I have posted in the Files section of the Yahoo Freedom2003 group the directions that Bomar sent me when I purchased a replacement lens. I followed them pretty much exactly. The hardest part was cleaning out the old caulking. The second hardest part was making sure that the new lens stayed centered until the caulking dried (today I would use some tape to keep it in place).

You need to make sure you get a caulk that is compatible with Lexan (my lens was acrylic). GE makes a slew of such caulks, all of which cost less bought on-line than what Bomar charges.

If you have any questions after reading the directions, I’d be happy to try to answer them.

Al
