I would like to hear from anyone with ocean sailing experience on a Freedom 36 or similar rigged sailboat. Can the Freedom 36 be safely handled in rough weather, and if so, what is the best sail arrangement? Thanks. EdIt’s Tax Time! Get tips, forms and advice on AOL Money Finance.

Are you referring to the cat ketch or
sloop rig of the F-36? It came in both versions I believe.

Thanks for the response, Alan. I am referring to a cat ketch with a mizzen staysail. I can imagine flying a storm jib on the mizzen staysail, and maybe even a trysail on the mizzen. My primary concern is how well the hull feels and handles on choppy seas and against steep waves. The 36 has a shallow under body and I can imagine the underside of the bow might pound or be bounced around. Any information from experience with a Freedom 36 at sea will be appreciated.

I would also like to hear from owners about real ocean experiences in both F36 models. Few ketches were made, possibly for good reason, but one has been available for years and I hope to see it this week. I can imagine that two carbon masts and mounts and rigging would cost a lot more than one. So, cost would have been a good reason to send Freedom and buyers away from this version of the design. But it is the handling that I am most interested in…handling in a real seaway.FargoAlan Kusinitz <akusinitz@…> wrote: Are you referring to the cat ketch or sloop rig of the F-36? There are a number of postings (can’t
recall if they’re all on the old board) you can search for. Some are in
general on storm sail combinations for cat ketches and some discuss the
handling of the F-36.
One owner of a 36 cat ketch had a false
bow added to increase buoyancy at the bow and reduce hobby horsing. I have no
personal experience with the 36 but some postings indicated that it may not
have been designed as a cat ketch in terms of bow buoyancy.
