Open Water Experience on Freedom 38

Posted by gjirak (gjirak@…>)

I’m a 1 year owner of a Freedom 38 located on the Chesapeake Bay and
would like to consider some Open Water sailing in the future. I’m
looking at a trip to Bermuda and later to the BVI and points south. I
was wondering if anyone has had much experience with Freedoms in Open
Water Cruising? How is the motion? How does she handle? Anything
unique regarding safety issues.

Thanks for the help.

Hi George,
I think you’d be in pretty darn good shape with a 38 offshore. I’ve
only been aboard one, which is now in Boston but spent a great majority
of its ‘life’ in Gibraltar. The current owner finds the boat, I
believe, to be quite fast and forgiving, and fun. The ability to short-
hand the boat easily is certainly a selling point, and the construction
is very good. As with any off-shore adventure, however, a lot of the
safety of the vessel comes down to the preparation that one does, both
in terms of equipment and personal knowledge. I think a 38 would be a
fine choice for offshore adventures.
