Short shaft 8 is what we have.
We just delivered Emmylou today using it.
5.9 knots into a 16 mph headwind and chop.
We have a bracket that raises and lowers motor though.

I had a long-shaft 6 HP 2-cycle Johnson “Sailmaster” on “Blue Merle”. Even with the bracket and lowered, I needed a long shaft. The 6 HP was more than adequate for the job. Able to push the boat at hull speed without being at full throttle. My concern is that an 8 HP is going to be a bit heavy. I have a longshaft Johnson “Sailmaster” 8Hp with a built in generator.
I never use the generator because I don’t run the engine enough - most
years it is not connected. Get a solar charger instead.
My engine weighs far too much for being mounted so far back. The 21s
are already tailheavy with just 2 adult in the cockpit - in particular
if you like to lead back against the railing that I have.
The long shaft is very helpful in the big stuff and when you motor-sail
because when you heel the motor can still reach deep enough.
I would look for a light 6hp Longshaft of good pedigree.

I’ve had an 8hp Yamaha long shaft for 10 years and never regretted
being able to make headway with 4 people into a strong headwind and
chop.

Try to not put too much weight on the stern. It will adversly affect
the sailing performance of the F21, and will necessitate using plugs in
the cockpit drains at all times. Being a racer, and never a cruiser, I
used a 2hp/4 stroke, long shaft, 28 pound Honda on each of my 2 F21s.
This is not enough hp for most sailors; but whatever size OB you get-
keep the weight down, and definitely get the long shaft. Too much
weight will also give your boat a permanent “tilt” to the side on which

I have a LONG SHAFT 4 hp. It works well. 6 hp might be ok but 8 hp
sounds like overkill. Also, the hull has a max speed. Overpowering
it wont help, even in a strong current.

Emmylou came with a 5hp but we are using an 8hp 2 stroke (about 70 lbs) from the previous Oday. Yes, it’s a bit too much weight, but with the external fuel tank we have the speed and range to motor out of trouble should the need arise (and there are times in gusty thunderstorms when the sanest thing to do is drop the sails, don the foulies and motor through the downpour).
We have the smaller, square Sunsei panel (bought at West for under $100) that keeps our batteries nicely charged. Simple, flexible system.

Sean,How did you mount your Sunsei panel? Did you end up buying the mounting bracket from West?Also, did you connect the panel directly to the battery, or use some sort of regulator? How is it wired in relation to the alternator (if you have one)?
