overall height of F35 for transport needed

Posted by willie doyle (williedoylemom@…>)
After talking to several boat transport companies it looks as thought A1 would be a good choice to ship our boat from RI to FL in the fall. They’ve asked for the overall height of our Freedom 35 but we don’t know that and are not near the boat right now to measure. Does anyone have that dimension? Thanks, Faith

There is a 1994 F-35 sloop called “Genteel Lady” for sale at McMichael Yachts in Mamaroneck NY-on the hard. I imagine they have full specs avail-either on their website or by calling.

Taking a rough guess based on an assumed draft of 5’ (aren’t
Freedoms notorious for understating the draft?), it looks like an
unrigged Freedom 35 is probably around 11 - 12 feet ‘tall,’ probably
shying toward the 11’ side. I could be way off as this is based on a
picture I saw of a guy stepping off his F35 - if you assume he’s
around 5’10" tall.

Ah-if you want that height, I could just reach the toe-rail. I’m 6-0 so figure 8 to 8.5 ft from bottom of the keel (blocked) to the toe rail. I have no idea how high the cabin top is.

Lisa Vincent from Freedom Yachts has the trucking dimensions you
need for all the various boats they build now (power) and Freedoms
built previously. Contact her at 800-999-2909 ext. 100. She may
refer you to the service department but that information is
available at Freedom.

Trucking companies will be interested in the air height of the boat
which is the keel to the highest point of hardware that is not going
to be removed on deck. Typically you would remove the bow rail or
perhaps the stern rail and then tilt the boat on the trailer.
Sometimes a winch or other other piece of hardware can be removed to
bring this height down. The lower the better. It is important to
communicate to a trucking company if the boat you are looking to
ship has the wing keel or fin keel. Wing keels, although shallower,
provide a challenge for boat transport trailers because the fin fits
nicely into the trailer well and can be set very close to the ground
where the wing has to sit on top of the trailer and so sits a little
higher. Both versions of the Freedom 35 have been shipped however
and this should not present a problem. Mast length is not really an
issue as the mast will be mounted on mast carriers alongside. Good
luck and enjoy the Freedom 35. That is a great sailing boat; lots of
fun. Mark Edwards, CPYB

Dear Mark, Yes, I think that is exactly what I need to know. They have a low rider truck but need to have the measurment from bottom of keel to top of cabin/lifelines be 12’ 6" or less. In other words, will our boat fit through tunnels, etc? Thanks so much. FaithMark Lynch <lzranch@…> wrote: Faith; Ours is still on the hard. I’ll send you the dimensions tomorrow night. Thank you for telling me about Lisa, Mark. I’d called Freedom with another question and they said all their material was “in the archives” on the sailboats. Perhaps she will still have the figures I need. You’ve been most helpful. Faith; Here are the numbers for our fin keel 1998 F35. On the hard the boat sits back on its haunches so the hight varies depending on where you take the measurement. The keel is sitting on blocks 8 inches above the ground and the fin extends below the blocks and is 6 inches above the ground. From the keel to the top of the winches on the coach roof it’s 10 feet 7 inches (11’3" - 8"). The bow is higher so from the top of the railing to the ground it’s 11 feet 8 inches (12’4" - 8"). This is the same height as from the ground to the top of the rope guards around the Dorade vents. Though I would assume you would take these off for the trip. Hope this helps.MarkOn May 26, 2006, at 7:27 AM, willie doyle wrote: After talking to several boat transport companies it looks as thought A1 would be a good choice to ship our boat from RI to FL in the fall. They’ve asked for the overall height of our Freedom 35 but we don’t know that and are not near the boat right now to measure. Does anyone have that dimension? Thanks, Faith Do you Yahoo!?
