Painting above the waterline

Posted by C. D. Myers (lambdazeta_tke@…>)

Who out there has painted thier boat above the waterline? I am
finding it difficult to use the “roll and tip” method by myself (see
photos/Hull #345). What kind of results does one get using just a
brush when applying Interlux Brightside?

Would you recomend buying or renting an airless paint sprayer?
Interlux reccomends the following specs…

Airless Spray Pressure: 170 bar/2500 psi. Tip Size: 0.33-0.41 mm/13-16
thou.

Does anyone know of a particular brand of sprayer that they would
reccomend? Everything I have found has spray tips in the 0.013 -
0.015 range and Interlux says that this is too low of a flow rate.

This weekend I sanded the first coat of primer with 330 grit paper
and put the second primer coat on the hull and cabin trunk.

I used the brush only technique from page 11 of the Interlux Boat
Painting Guide and Color Card." This seemed to go well and took 3
hours or about the same time as rolling. I got more even coverage
than using the roller but those having the use of an assistant might
still find good results using the “role and tip” method.

I followed Interlux’s instructions and mixed the second primer coat
about 50/50 with my finish paint (do any of you remember Operation
Petticoat?). I thinned the paint down with 333 for better spread
ability. This second coat shows all of the imperfections of the
first coat. I will need to do a lot of sanding next weekend to get
everything fair for the first finish coat.

I still want to try spraying the finish coat. I sent Wagner an email
with Interplay’s specs. for airless spray application. After 3 days
they sent me an email back asking me to call them. I let you all
know what they have to say.
