I repainted my aluminum Edson steering column. I sandedoff all loose
finish and scuffed up the intact finish. I then used Interlux
etcher, primer and 2 part poly as directed. The results were very
satisfying,now on its 3rd season

Has any owner repainted the aluminium mast and/or boom
on their boat?
If “yes” could they please share their experience and
advise the best way to tackle this issue. Can you
also give me the name of the paint used.
I did not paint my mast or booms, but I did paint my aluminium
hatches and the aluminium mast collars.
Hammerite has an excellent non-ferro primer (red or grey), water
soluble, to prime aluminium. This is good stuff that will not wear
off and only needs a topcoat if you really insist. It is matte, but
it looks good in itself. You can cover it with other paints.
Hammerite topcoats are tough, but not easy to work with, they are
very critical with curing times. I had lots of problems with the
hatches and had to redo some of them several times to get a smooth
finish. But the primer is okay. You don’t even have to do a lot of
cleaning and sanding to get it to stick.
Further, my aluminium wishbones were professionally sanded (by hand)
and sprayed in Awlgrip. I think they did two coats of primer and two
coats of topcoat. The paint is very tough and elastic, not brittle
at all. If you drill a hole in the aluminium, it’s like you first
have to penetrate a layer of plastic.
I repainted my camber spar and my solid vang six years ago. Go to http://www.por15.com/ These guys have an excellent product/system.
Their customer service will talk you through the project and you will
be pleased with the results.
