Painting CF mast

Posted by Folia Grace (fgrace2000@…>)

Has any one painted a carbon fiber mast? what did you use?
How did it turn out? Since the mast does bend a bit, I am concerned
with paint cracking over time.

Regards,

Fred.

I just finished painting the wing mast on my F25, and replacing the
bearing. I used System 3 WP 155 primer and WP LPU topcoat, 3 coats of
each. The paint is a 2 part linear polyurethane that thins with
water.Primer thins with rubbing alcohol and water.

Time will tell how flexible it is. It looks pretty good now.

Will be offline for 2 1/2 months while living aboard and taking a
ship’s cabinetry course at the Silva Bay Shipyard School on Gabriola
Island BC. Muse and I will be at Page’s Marina and would be happy to
visit with any Freedom folk passing through.

I had some paint chipping on my F35 from a radar reflector tied to the flag
halyard. I called the factory and they said that they use a spray can of
“appliance enamel” for touch up. I did spray the small area of my mast that
needed it two years ago and so far all is well. Initially it was a brighter
white than the surrounding area but has aged to be close to the original
awlgrip color. I cleaned the area with alcohol, lightly sanded then
sprayed.

My masts were sprayed with Awlgrip, the mizzen 25 yrs ago. It has the
famous Freedom horizontal cracks now. My mainmast (new in 2000) was
also Awlgrip sprayed, and still looks shiny and new.
