Before you take the paint can to your
mast, try 3M Restorer Wax. I have a lot of discoloration and scratches on the
front of my mast from the end of the camber spar having banged on the front of
the mast (I am loosening the forestay to lessen this problem). I was waxing the
boom and I went after the first six feet of the mast. Incredible results. The product
has some light rubbing compound in it. It eliminated all the scratches and the
mast is brilliant white. Really sharp, and it looks like new. So in time up the
mast I go to do the whole thing.

Re: Painting old Carbon Fiber Masts?
All of this talk of
repainting masts has got me feeling guilty. My 1987 F-30’s mast is showing
signs of age (paint-wise), but I have no desire to pull it. Has anyone
ever painted a mast in place? If so, how?

Many thanks.

Did you have any cracking in the original paint or
was it still
smooth when you painted it? How long ago did you
paint it and with
what specific paint and primer/fillers?
Thanks

I awl gripped my black 1983 F32 mast the

no problem. As recommended first a few
coats of grey primer,
then a few white. I didn’t like how hot
the mast got when black.
I’m torn about the dark blue boot strip
around the cabin sides
for the same reason. The heat can’t be
good for the material,
but it is part of the look.

I heared from someone in
this forum who painted the masts and
the
paint got many tiny horizontal cracks after a
few months, mainly
from mast bending, haven´t you had
this?
