Parallel cracks in carbon fibre mast

I just bought a 1984 Freedon 21. The boat is in very good shape for its age and appears to have been well taken care of. I have seen a lot of discussion in the forums about hair line cracks running around the mast but have not found any discussion about parallel cracks. The attached picture shows the cracks. Are these something I need to address before I launch the boat? I will be sailing her in Lake Erie.

Would any one know who the mfg of the mast is and how I might contact them. This is the first boat I have had with carbon fibre and don’t have a clue on how to deal with it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

These cracks appear to be just the “mud coat” applied over the laminate to provide a smooth surface for paint. If applied too thick, this “flexible” fairing compound will crack. To be sure these are cosmetic, chip away a small piece to verify that the cracks do not extend into the fiberglass “hoop-wrap” or worse, into the carbon fibers. A strong light and sometimes a magnifying glass can help.

Thanks Dwight,

I will do as you suggest. They do not seem to go any deeper than the surface layer. I will keep you posted.
