perko seacock

Posted by fgljff (fgljff@…>)

The head overboard discharge seacock on my F25 is a Perko. The hose is standard
marine
head discharge 1.5" ID. Thus, the tailpiece fitting on the seacock has a 1.5" OD
barb. But
here’s the strange part: I measured the other end of the fitting, where it
screws into the
seacock, and it’s 1.75". Can that be right? I’ve never heard of a fitting like
that. My plan is to
remove the y-valve, and use the overboard discharge thru-hull for a deck wash
intake.

I assume that the threaded portion of the thru-hull is 1.75" , and
that screws in to the seacock, and its internal dimension is 1.50" .
Does this make sense? Plumbing is MYSTERIOUS. Herm

I don’t know about this particular fitting, but hose barbs and NPS (pipe) fittings are measured entirely differently. A barb’s size is the inside diameter of the hose you’ll put on it. NPS sizing has always mystified me and is not one for one with the actual size. The plumbing section of the McMaster Carr catalog has a chart showing actual sizes v. NPS sizes.

Yes, that’s the problem. I looked it up and the NPT sizes are actually quite
nominal. I found
that 1.5" NPT actually has a thread size of 1.9" (close to what I measured). So
a 1.5 NPT
and a 1.5 barb have quite different diameters, but are both considered nominal
1.5"s!
