Mika,
thanks for posting those pictures of your 39 pilothouse. I really like
that boat. On flickr you said you see 10 knots off the wind. Is it
pretty consistent, and how hard does it have to be blowing to get those
speeds?
Great boat - thanks for posting.

Thanks, yeah the boat is pretty sweet.
The day we had consistent off the wind 10+ knots it was blowing around 35kph.
We were
often spiking up to 12knots.

Amazing. The best speeds I’ve seen in Bright Star were up in Maine,
wing on wing, in about 18kts of southwest wind. We were doing a
consistent 8.5, with spikes of 10+… and it was soooooo smooooooth.

For us it wasnt so smooth however. We had not yet properly installed the
reefing lines and
we were losing control of the rudder. The wind kept picking up and for the last
three
hours of the trip we had to switch off autopilot and violently steer by hand.
It was quite a
rush. We installed the reefing lines the next day. The 12 knot spikes we saw
where when
we started surfing down the huge swells that where building up.
On a normal day in lighter winds she goes 5.5 to 6.5 knots and doesnt point as
well as our
previous boat which was a 27 foot Bavaria sloop.

Without a jib, that’s not surprising. However, I’ve found in Bright
Star that the upwind performance is more than adequate for cruising,
especially with the board down.
About reefing - on Bright Star, once the apparent is above about 12, we
throw a reef in the mizzen for exactly the reasons you’re describing -
the weather helm is too intense. One reef in the mizzen, you get full
control back and you end up actually picking up about half a knot.
I know there’s a PH39 in the Boston area - they spent a few days at
Constitution a couple years ago - and I’d really like to see how it
sails some time.
