While sailing yesterday in a nice, steady 8 knot breeze, I began to
wonder about points of sail. Why is it that between close haul and beam
reach every angle of sail seems to make a difference; yet beyond beam
reach there is very little difference in the sail settings? I would
swear that there was very little difference between the sail setting
for a beam reach and a broad reach.
Anyone explain that, or am I just a bad sailor?

That is somewhat typical of the Freedom rig with the large main and
small jib. The jib exists mostly to optimize air flow over the
main. As you fall off the wind, the main, which is very forgiving,
moves the boat quite well without a lot of tweaking. There should be
somewhat of a difference between a beam reach and a broad reach,
however. The only way to tell on your boat is to adjust the sails
while holding your course and see what the speedo says. In 8 knots
of breeze, you won’t notice much difference. Try it when the wind is
blowing in the high teens and you’ll probably notice quite a difference.
Good luck

Jim,
You need to equip your sails with telltales (on the leach,
and about 10-12" from the luff, and then pay very close attention to
them. You want the leech telltales to stream on any point of sail,
You want the windward luff telltale to act somewhat nervous while the
leech telltale is streaming. Most of us, without the visual help
provided by the telltales tend to sheet in too far. If you have a
sensitive knotmeter, try watching the effect of sail trim on your
speed, while trimming and observing the telltales. Herm
