I am contemplating purchasing a '94 Freedom 35 with the camber spar jib, and want to know two things:
- how do they sail? What is the experience like? Recently, I’ve owned a C&C 33, and a Tartan 34 centerboarder; currently I own a C&C 29 mk 2.
2 I am contemplpating using the boat for extended cruising from Maine to the Bahamas. Anyone have experience on this type of use for this boat?
Thanks,
Lou

Hi Lou,
I can’t speak to the 35 but I own an '84 Hoyt 32 (which is almost
as big) and love the simplicity of the freedom rig. I, too, went from a
traditionally headsail rigged boat to a freedom and don’t miss grinding
winches at all. The performance is adequate upwind and more than adequate
off the wind.
I find the boat seaworthy and stable. I don’t to reef the main
till the wind exceeds 20 kts.
Good luck

I think the 32 has more interior volume than the modern 35 which is
essentially a 33 foot boat with a swim platform. So if anything your
32 is larger in some respects.

Hi Louis,my wife and I sailed our 1999 F35 from
Stonington, CT. to Halifax,NS and back. The boat
handled the seas very well. I have a roller furling
jib. I believe the camber spar jib will be better on a
down wind run. Bill — louis spitz

Lou:
We bought a '94 F35 two years ago. Previously we had owned a Bristol
32 and then a Pearson 365. For us, the F35 is a really good balance
between accommodations and sailing ability. At first we were not
convinced about the camberspar have really gotten to like the concept.
Particularly downwind, were Freedoms really shine the spar means not
needing a pole (been 1o kts with strong following wind). We both also
love not having to tack a large head sail . Great fun doing circles
around our friends. We are generally able to keep up with Pearson
36s upwind but not Cal 39s (not sure what can). Just remember, no
rigging to grab hold of when coming aboard.
We have not done long-distance blue water, so can not help there.

We have a F32 (Hoyt) and take it to the Bahamas twice a year. She sails great and makes great time and is sea kindly.
We love the camber spar.
