Looking at buying a late 90s F45 CC. What should I look out for during the survey process? Island Packets have a chain plate issue. Does Freedom have any know design issues that become issues later in life?
Freedom Yachts have a balsa cored hull. Most are well built and fine, but not all. If possible, haul out and let it dry for a few days before getting moisture readings on the hull.
The Freedom carbon mast may have “crazing” which is usually a cosmetic issue and not structural.
However, making sure the mast has no movement at the base and the deck is critical. It can be addressed in the yard. But it is very un-nerving if the mast is moving around underway in waves making creaks, groans and bangs.
Any cored deck/hull on 30+ year old boat is going to have some moisture. Tillotson-Pearson cored boats are known for this issue. But your surveyor should help you determine how much is too much.
Otherwise it is just like surveying any other old boat. General condition, defects, sails, rigging, engine, drive, systems, electronics, etc.
Good Luck.
Give Paul Dennis a call and ask him what to look for. He is the Guru.
