Warning! I have a 1987 Freedom 36. The dripless shaft seal that it came with
started to
leak. The PYI staff said that it now leaks because the air was not bled out
when the boat
was launched. This may have happened several times since I did not know about
this
necessity for six years. I don’t know if the previous owner failed to do this
either.
Question: Do you have to remove the rudder in order to remove the shaft? Or,
can the
new PYI dripless shaft seal and cutless bearings be installed without removing
the rudder?

On S/V Nereid, I was able to remove the shaft seal without removing the
shaft, or the rudder. I was also able to remove the shaft past the rudder
(prop removed) of course. Soap and water on the shaft helps with cutlass
bearing sliding.

Thanks a lot for this information. It releaves my mind a lot since I will be at
this job
during the next two weeks.

I think the newer PYI dripless shaft seals don’t need to be “burped”
after going back in the water. FWIW some of the local surveyors in
the Pacific Northwest where the PYI is headquartered, are not big
fans of the system. We had one on our 39 and it never gave us a
problem. We knew it needed to be burped so we never had any damage
from running it dry after haulout.

The ability to remove the shaft w/o removing the rudder seems to
vary within the F36 production run. On my F36 ,#29,the only way the
shaft would pass the rudder is if I removed the strut. I have
removed the rudder. The biggest part of removing the rudder is
removing the steering gear. The rest is muscle.
Having said that, the PSS seal can be installed just by moving the
shaft back 6" and with special tools, a cutless bearing can be
pressed on w/o removing the shaft. A well equiped yard will have the
tools.
As for the LOW Speed PSS shaft seal, not only did you have to burp
after launch, but heavy chop or severe wakes would cause an air
bubble. PSS no longer makes the low speed model and only sells a
water injected high speed model. For low speed applications (sail),
DO NOT plumb into your raw water cooling system. Just lead the tube
up high on the centerline and use it as a vent.

It seems to only work on a strut mounted bearing.
