prop squeek?

Posted by reedjayt2004 (reedjayt@…>)

This may sound dumb, but it seems I have developed a squeek in my max-
prop on my F35. We have been using the engine more the last two days
on the Chesapeake than all season. Today on the way in, we developed
a squeek. There is no squeek in the engine, transmission, or interior
shaft, but you can hear the squeek in the cockpit. When I run in
reverse there isn’t any squeek. After I ran in reverse for a few
minutes and then switched to forward, the squeek disapeared for a few
minutes but then returned. The cutlass bearing was just replaced two
years ago and I had a diver clean the shaft and prop last week. We
have been going strong since the weekend, with no problem until today.

Has anyone had any similar problems?

Thanks
Jay

Was the Max-prop greased this season? I
have a variprop which has a grease fitting. I assume the max-prop has one too?

Yes. The Max-prop has two grease fittings and I grease them each
year. Good thought though.

Thanks

I know the jellies are bad but have you checked it for fishing gear?
Could be as simple as polly line wrapped on the shaft between the prop
and cutlass (strut?).

Where are you on the bay? If you see a big dark blue F 40 center
cockpit out there… it’s us!

Good thought George. We’re in Rock Hall at Osprey Point Marina. Our boat’s
name is Sketch. We were on our way back from St Michaels when the squeek
occured. I burped the shaft seal this morning and that did have a little
air in it, but since I couldn’t hear the squeek from inside the engine
compartment, I’m not holding much hope that it will solve the problem. We
did cancel our trip to Baltimore today and I’ll play with it a little closer
to home.

Thanks

Jay
