Propane dilemma

Mike -hello! Old post I know - I have the 2 vertical 1 gal tanks. I bought one new and then the second one. One is out of date now but I have a guy in Stockton who fills it no questions :). I may have to purchase a new one at $300 one day. I love cooking with propane- similar to how I feel about cooking a home with gas stove/range. Seems cheap and very controllable. I have the 2 burner stove top and oven with broiler and bake - I use them all underway…if you are a cooking minimalist () electric would work for basic stuff. More elaborate cooking will see watts increase…. I know the big power boats use electric but they have gen sets et al to deal with that! You know all that. I’m just chiming in! We should plan a Rendezvous sometime with sf boats……

Well, I need to know who your propane guy is. I have been using Campora in Stockton but every darn time i go over there one of my bottles needs to be recertified. They are old as the hills but in almost perfect shape with up to date OPD valves.
I was thinking the same thing re a get together. Another Freedom sailor in the Bay contacted me re a 32 he was looking at down at Coyote Point. So there are a coouple of us around. Have not seen Carliane on Kyntana for a while though.
When would you want to consider doing this?

Back to cooking. Yea, i have a bunch of drawings on my whiteboard but concluded that it was really going to stress my electrical system. It is hard to generate the power to recharge the big batteies i would need.
Having said this, i just saw a big “power station” on Amazon at almost half price. This is one of those large portables which could actually double as part of a whole home system ashore. As such it might even qualify for an IRA tax rebate.
But it just got too difficult and complex for the time being. I just decided to stick with the propane for now.

What type of stove do you have? My burners are great but the oven is tempermental and i rarely use it.

Mike - Campora did that to me too. I go the u-haul on Wilson and Sanguinetti  …. I’ll check on Tuesday when I’m at the boat again what type of stove I have. I haven’t seen Kynntana either for a long while- maybe we can hear her here! As to when…. I’m waiting on Paul Dennis for my gooseneck repair (should be all good in a week…. After that I’m open

I am headed to the Bay on the 3rd of October for the Vallejo 1/2. More like the Vallejo 1/1 for me.

I spend more time in transit these days overnighting at my favorite anchorages on the way downriver. I think that is more fun than the actual races due to my old bones. The boat is increasingly weighed down with all my creature comforts I am ashamed to say.

Anyway, I should be up there by the 6th. Races are 7/8 so I will be in the Richmond area night of the 6th, Vallejo on the 7th and back to Richmond the evening of the 8th, departing Bay area 9th or, latest 10th, for home.

Great, I will try that fill station next time I run out. I have the two tanks and as soon as one is empty I swap then get the empty filled as the B/U. Of course the problem is I don’t run out often and the years go by with astonishing rapidity.

i do remember when I have used the stove, my gas consumption went way up.

Re propane safety, I open my laz locker and leave it open as a heads up when the bottle is open. I activate the solenoid on the panel and cook. I immediately close the solenoid switch when finished with the cooking. I will also close the tank at that point. Sometimes I will leave it open if I plan the use the stove again in the immediate future. I always turn the tank off when I hit the sack, although I have forgotten a time or two. I have never forgotten to turn the solenoid switch off.

How do you handle this?

Ok on those dates - we can try any of those - like you mentioned earlier, Paradise Point may be just the thing…… I’m bad with the propane - with my two tanks and me using gas breakfast and dinner - my propane seems to last forever! And, I leave my valve at the tank open, with the lid down all the time! I do flip the solenoid at the breaker panel on only when in use and immediately flip it off when done……I also clean the propane locker every couple of months…

I don’t trust leaving the bottle open but, believe me, there have been some dark and stormy nights at anchor when I have been very unhappy having to go in deck and shut it. I would be nice and cozy and then I all windblown and wet , usually in my underwear. :joy:

Hi Mike - ok, stove/oven is force 10 1999- valve is always open and panel is off until specific use. Solenoid is good and hoses new from 2016.. On the possible rendezvous dates still open! I may have jury duty next week, and Stephanie was talking about going to New Orleans  but so far that is just in the thinking stage. If we get serious we should post a thread for rendezvous separately so folks can chime in….? Best of luck to you on the upcoming races as a durable single hander! Yay! Know what you mean about favorite anchorages and all- peaceful!
