Propane Tank Mounting

Posted by boatfelicity (boatfelicity@…>)

I recently purchased a 1984 Freedom 32. It is equiped with a propane
stove and there are two propane tanks mounted horizontaly in two
separate small lockers in the cockpit - the port tank being the
active tank and the starboard being the spare.

The spare is missing but the active tank is a small diameter
aluminum Worthington tank with the following markings:

TW 7.8 LB
WC - 15.0 LB
DT 4.5 IN
5 - 99

I went to West Marine to purchase another spare and found the same
tank in a vertical mount only - it has a safety device inside that
prevents the tank from being used in the horizontal position.

Does anyone have any insight into how these tanks are used in the
horizontal position? Is there a retrofit to mount different tanks?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi Steve,
I went through this whole issue last summer with my F32. The
horizontal tank is exempt from the new law prohibiting the older type
valves. Short of some significant retrofitting, we’re stuck with this
layout. A professional gas store knowledgable of the regulations will fill
this tank for you. I go to the nearest Maine Oxy location in Maine. It’s
a 7 lb tank and will last at least a week if not longer. We cruised with a
full tank last summer and still have quite a bit left.
What I have done is purchase a new 5 LB upright tank for
backup. I checked to make sure the hose will fit when the tank is sitting
on the cockpit seat, which it does.
Hope you enjoy your new boat. Hot and cold running water is so
civilized…

You might try a welding supply house. I am not sure but I think that
horizontal tanks are exempted from the overfill protection law. Only a very
professional gas vendor will know this and be able to fill your tanks.

I’m sure you can get a copy of the rule exempting horizontal tanks on-line. Print it out and take it with you when you go to get the tank refilled.

One other thought- tanks will need re-certification after some years. It
will cost much less than a new tank. Responsible propane suppliers will not
fill a tank with an expired certification . Most gas distributors will
service(and sell) tanks.
