During our sea trial we could only achieve 2800rpms at max throutle
from the 66HP yanmar turbo. It should achive 3600 RPMs. The engine
runs great and does not smoke. It only has 2050 hrs on engine. The
boat achived 8.9 Knots but only 2800rpms. I took the turbo off to
have checked out. The mechanic suggested that I make sure that I am
not over propped for our configuration. I too beleive that the boat
may have too much prop. Any owners out there with a 66HP Yanmar on
your 45’ boat and can achive rated rpms with your prop. Could you let
me know what prop you have installed on you freedom. Thank you so
much.

You are making well over ‘Hull Speed’ which I calculated at just under 8 knots based on a waterline lenght of 34’ 5" therefore I would say you are definitely ‘over-propped’. This is nothing unusual as I have noted that many Freedoms are spec’d with props which are over pitched. My F32 has an original 2 bladed 14x14 prop and the engine only rev’s to 3,000RPM. My calculations tell me I need a 14x11 prop - That’ll be a job for the next haul-out.
Let me know what the propeller diameter is for the F45 and I will calculate the prop pitch required. BTW: Do you know what size propeller is already fitted?

Are
you sure that the tach is accurate? I just bought a boat with a Yanmar
and the surveyor found that the tach was running 500 rpm too low.

Not sure but I believe that the surveyer during my sea trial checked
the egine RPM and temp with his own gagues.

Sorry, should have asked before, I also need to know the transmission
gear ratio.
