I am thinking of pulling the mast to redo the lights. Has anyone done
it recently and could give me an idea of the cost?
Thanks,

Alternative is to find a yard with a cherry picker, and change the
light w/o removing the mast. I know of a yard in Oriental, NC that
has a fixed mount cherry picker right at water’s edge. Herm

Herm:
Sward
is in Annapolis.
Are
you referring to Sailcraft Services in Oriental? My new boat was hauled
there for the survey. Their fixed cherry picker is neat. I wish I
could say I was as happy with their work.

Yup, It’s Sailcraft Services. However good pavement and a mobile
cherry picker will work too. There’s got to be yard in the Annapolis
area with similar services Herm

There is a boatyard in Severna Park which has worked with Freedom
masts. Cypress Marine Sevices, Located up the Magothy River. They are

Thanks for that information. Today I had the mast pulled at Port Annapolis Boat Yard and Marina. I was very impressed at how well it went. I took many pictures of it all. I stripped everything I could to save money on the marina’s time. It was a tough job, but a couple of girlfriends and I got the boom off. It is really nice to be able to see everything as in the inside of the mast, top of the mast and everything in between without having to go up. It’s good to know how it

I would be interested in what your mast step looks like and how it may have been modified in the past to prevent the torque/twist when going from tack-to-tack.
Post pictures if you can…

I pulled my mainmast on my pH39 two years ago at Water Oak Marina in
Pasadena - about $240 roundtrip. I epoxied fiberglass inside the base
to make it fit tighter on the tophat step and had Gauharer make a two
part collar that I bolted to the mast step base and it provides
twisting resistance and lateral movement reistance. I rewired using the
great idea of wire ties every foot or so to prevent wire slap and
installed those great LED tri/anchor from sailor solutions.
I’ll post picts and drawings.

G’day Greg,
I have to do the same thing on my F39 Express. Do you have any pics of
the Garhauer base? Did you glass the top hat or the inside of the
mast and or put it back together when wet? Any more detail would be
greatly appreciated, I will be doing it before I leave the UK next year.
Thanks
Marno

Hi Marno - I epoxy glassed the inside of the mast and then sanded it to
make a reasonably tight fit on the tophat. Tricky making the
measurements. Since there was still a very small movement left I had
the collars made and used hard rubber as a bushing. They are bolted o
the mast base in four places. I’ll post pictures in the next week or
so.

I have had the mast hauled and re stepped. I was really glad to have done it so now I know what is what there. At the base of the mast as you may all know already is an L bolt which is what bolts the mast into place-really only one bolt in the base. I found that the wiring inside the mast was a bundle of wires that were kind of wound around the inside of the mast tight to the walls. I wanted to run new wire for the new lights so pulled that bundle out. I took the old anchor light out and replaced it with a new LED tri-color light with a photo diode. I replaced the radio antenna, and added a steaming light/deck light. It was a trick running the wiring for it all. I drilled one hole for the wiring for the steaming light to run the wires through, then riveted the two sides of the fixture to the mast.
While down, I looked at the cracks in the collar and scratches in the mast and filled them with West System resin. I think that was recommended, wasn’t it? I got a new main halyard and used the old one for a second spare jib halyard. I now know what the sheave looks like up there and what everything is there. Oh, I bought a stronger, smaller diameter line for the halyard to run more freely in the sheave hopping it will haul the sail easier-time will tell. In Annapolis-one of the more expensive to have things done, it was $1,000.00 for them to prep the mast-not much since I did most of it, lift it, then in reverse to reinstall it. They charged me for 2 guys and hour or two? and the crane charge each way.
Hope this info helps anyone.
