I’ve spent the last few weekends getting my Freedom, soon to be
christended the Maccochaque II (pronounced Mack-A-Jack. Maccochaque is
a Shawnee Indian word that means “place of refreshment.” It also
happens to be the name of the grade school where my father and his
siblings attended.) ready for paint. I was looking at the mast and now
have the following questions:
What experience have any of you had drilling holes in the mast to
accommodate electrical wiring (mast light)?
What do you use to cap the mast to keep the elements (snow/rain/bird
droppings/squirrel nests) from running down the inside of the hollow
mast tube and accumulating in the cabin?

Both questions have had numerous answers and responses. Search the forum. Re: drilling the carbon fiber mast. I wired “Blue Merle” with a mast light. See the Freedom21.info site for detailed pictures. I drilled a hole at the base of the mast to handle the 1/2" 4 conductor wire. As for a cap, some owners have used a PVC “plug” that is often used for waste pipe. Availabe at your local home improvement store. I was fortunate to still have the original soft plastic cap for “Blue Merle”. I have capped my mast with a plastic cap that has built in
compression springs. Go to http://www.mcmaster.com/ and look on page
3631. I do not recall which size Thermoplastic cap I used, but I
imagine it is the 3.5" or 4". I then sealed it with a UV resistent
sealant.

I drilled a little smaller than the diameter of the threads. The stainless steel panhead screws are self-tapping. The open end is covered with rubber membrane roofers use. Our sail loft gave it to us. A band clamp holds it in place. I covered the bandclamp with black PVC tape. I had to make sure the wind indicator cleared the antenae. After PVC tape I applied liquid electrical tape as well. White silicone caulk fills hole where wires penetrate. Let us know what you come up with. Seancharles

Your cap is is an idea I did not think of. I wonder
if its possible to shrink wrap a rubber cap?
