racing

I’m thinking of entering a race next weekend, it will be my first race
and I’ve never raced before. I was hoping to get some pointers from
the group and try and figure out how they score it. I know we have
some sort of handicap number which I think is between 210 and 240, how
do you apply this number to your time. Also how do you beat a bigger
boat which is suppose to be faster. Any input would be great.

I don’t have a clue Doug, but I’m very interested in racing next year. Please let us know how it works out.

Use this URL: www.ussailing.org/phrf/ Most racers are members of US
Sail and a local yacht club. If you are in the Chesapeake you can join
CBYRA and get a PHRF rating directly.

Here in northern VT on Lake Memphremagog, I race my Freedom 21 and have enjoyed doing it. Broad reaches and spinnaker runs are the best while beating into the wind is a drag. I have found not to overpoint but to go more for speed and perform many more tacks.

Use the VMG to Waypoint feature on your GPS. It is the velocity that you are achieving to the next mark (which should be a waypoint in your GPS). Faster speed doesn’t always mean faster to the mark.
True, the Freedom 21, without the jib, needs to be sailed low.
