Does anyone know what effect the carbon fiber masts have on radar
signal. Mine is mounted on the mizzen masthead but I would like to
move it closer to the deck, too much weight aloft I think. Is the mast
going to block the signal from the rear?
Also what is the current thinking on lightning protection? Are the
masts conductive?
Looking to mount a vertical windlass up forward also, are there any
guidelines for holes in the deck in this area? It is taking a lot of
stress supporting the mast collar?
Thanks

I added a Simpson Lawrence 900 Freefalll to my F-33. But I put it well forward of the mast so the forward bolts and most of the hole for the chain go through the bowsprit just prior to where it goes over bow. So the holes aft near the mast are quite small and not right next to the collar. This works quite well and the chain lies well just forward of the mast. I was concerned about the weight but it doesn’t effect the trim or cause hobby horsing. (I have 135 feet of 5/16 chain and a 44 lb delta anchor (used to have a 35 lb CQR which has a much longer shank and would have to be tilted to the side of the windlass.

This may be a little late but I check this group only monthly. I
installed a Lewmar windlass on my Freedom 36 several years ago and
have used a quite a bit. Used a fairing block on the deck to make sure
it was flat (taped sandpaper to the deck and kept moving the fairing
block back and forth on the sandpaper until it was formed to the
deck) and a large backing plate under the deck. Used plenty of
sealant and have had not problems. My only advise is not to
overtighten so that the deck is compressed. Where the chain goes
through the deck, I removed the wood core and filled in with West
apoxy/filler mix.
