radar mount

We had a radar mount fabricated out of aluminum in Mexico where our
boat, Hopalong, a 39-foot cat ketch, is located. The mount was
constructed by a metal shop based on a cardboard model that we built,
along with measurements that we supplied. The curve for the part that
fits around the mast was crafted from a cardboard template. We cut
several half circles until we found one that fit the mast at the
appropriate height. Photos can be seen on the freedom yachts site on
Yahoo.

The mount will be fastened to the mast with a high build epoxy used to
construct aircraft, Hysol 9460. We ran across the epoxy as a result of
a message on this board last spring.

We will file an update after the mount is secured to the mast.

How do you plan to route the cable(s)?

We plan to run the cable down the outside of the mast within a
flexible, covered track that will be attached to the outside of the
mast either with epoxy or some other adhesive. The material that we
are using for the track was originally designed to be used around the
edges of docks. The cable (and the one for the deck light that will be
mounted on the bottom of the radar mount) will run through the deck
via Cable Clams. Inside the cabin, the routing will take both cables
under the overhead panels to the nav station and electrical panel.

3M makes a double back tape that is special order that may be better than
epoxy. I use it for attaching an impeller underwater and have never lost
it. I don’t know the complete 3M number but it is a VHB, very high bond,
tape. They also use it for bonding alum. sides of tractor trailers in place
of rivets.
