Has anyone access to the test of radar reflectors that was published
in Practical Sailor? I need one for the new boat and have to choose
between Blipper, Echomax and Tri-lens. Here in the NL’s the sailing
mag did a real life test and it turned out all reflectors suck…
If you know which issue it was in, I’ll look through my pile of Practical Sailor./

The Tri-lens was the best to my recollection. It’s most easily mounted at
its bottom, so always wondered about such a mass at the top of a Freedom
stick. The Davis amazingly enough is always the next best and certainly
the best value. The others never perform well in tests, their prices and
ease of attachment nonwithstanding.

There was a test in either Yachting Monthly or PBO last year: I’ll see if I
still have it. It said
the EchoMax was the only one to meet current IMO recommendations (>10m square),
but
the results they got from a Sea-Me transponder convinced me to buy one, and it
has been
very successful. It’s also light weight, and sits nicely at the top of the mast,
visible for
miles. Current drain is light, and it tells you when it’s responding. (Last two
trips to
Norway it never showed less than two radars triggering it, though we saw no
ships at all
during the second!)

Gerald
