Re: bottom paint

Posted by Thomas Wales (twales@…>)

Greetings,

I have come to the conclusion that I need to strip the paint off the
bottom of the boat. Does anyone have any suggestions and or experience
with stripping bottom paint? I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

I had a prior boat soda-blasted and was pleased with the result. But
the operator really needs to know what he/she is doing so you don’t take
off the gel coat. At recent prices, it was about the same as having the
yard do the scrape/sand routine.

I did read about baking soda in place of sand blasting as very easy on the
bottom and any barrier coats.

If it’s the ablative kind of bottom paint, I would think that
pressure-washing whould do it. These machines, used incorrectly, can
destroy wood, so I think that if you find the right settings and nozzle,
they would work on just about any paint. I expect that about three seconds
with a pressure washer would be the equivalent of two seasons of cruising,
in terms of ablation of paint. Around here (NY/NJ) this is how they remove
the barnacles. You can rent the machines for a few bucks a day.

Good luck!

Norm
