yard for spinnaker is made of aluminum. I had a local shopr cut me a new 12 foot one.
I set up my Jib first with a small roller furling. but I just got my spinnaker set up and feel I will use the jib much less.
I am however looking into adding an external halyard so I can have the jib and spinnaker rigged at all times.

Hi,
I just put a down payment on a freedom 21, it’s in need of a little
work and is missing some equipment. There is no spinnaker, but the
piece that holds the tube is there, is the spinnaker yard made of
aluminum or graphite? Also there is no jib, would you get a jib
first or try to set up a spinnaker first?
Thanks

I have a 21. she sails very nicely on Main alone.
I have a stay sail that I use when the wind is light.
I haven’t used the spinnaker in years as I trailer and it takes too long to rig everything. Good luck.

Clive did you use your gunmount spin much and at what angles were you able to sail.
I just tigged mine but have not set sail yet

ok great i intend to use the spin in light air or downwind.
I have a stay with the harken furler trying to figure out how to rig an external halyard to the lazy jack up top and furler to the cockpit side of pulpit to allow the spin freedom.
any thoughts

Is the jib you use the blade jib or the genoa? if it’s the genoa, how
large is it?

I’ve owned two F21s, a shoal draft, and now a fin keel, which I
mostly race. I have a small Harken staysail furler, which makes
handling the genoa or jib very easy. The large class genoa adds a
lot of power from 1 to 12 knots, especially if there are waves to
punch through. I have a blade for over 12 knots. If you are a racer,
you will not want to race without the genoa or jib. If you are
strictly a cruiser i highly recommend the Doyle Sails UPS (Utility
power sail), which is a cross between a genoa and a spinnaker. It is
a strong nylon sail that can be used upwind, on reaches, and dead
downwind without a pole, and can be mounted on a furler. If you have
no spinnaker or spinnaker equipment, and are not a serious racer,
the UPS might be the best and cheapest way for you to go. If I were
strictly a cruiser, I would have only the main, and a UPS on a
furler, and would put the spinnaker, pole and gear in storage. Go to
the Doyle Sails website and you will see just how this sail works.
Good luck. Charley
PS For all you need to know about the F21, and more, including sail
dimensions,go to the Matt Dwyer F21 website

J. I use the gunmount spinnaker often on downwind legs of races, but
not on reaches. I’ve used it on reaches in long races in medium to
light air, but when the wind is over 10 knots I prefer to use the
genoa on reaches. If I sailed as a cat rig only, without a headsail,
I would use the spinnaker on both reaches and runs. The gunmount
spinnaker is more difficult to hoist and douse when you have a
headsail tacked to the bow. Charlie

J. I added a second halyard to the front of the mast, by riveting a
tang with an eye and block to the front of, and around the sides of,
the mast, just above the original genoa/spinnaker halyard. I use a 2
piece Harken small staysail furler. I leave the upper swivel
attached to the genoa halyard, and the drum attached to the foot of
the genoa. I use fast pins to attach the head and tack of the genoa
to the upper swivel and to the drum. The drum has a snap shackle at
the bottom that I attach to the eye on top of the gunmount. In the
future I will attach a shock cord to the stanchion nearest to the
mast, and unsnap the furler drum from the eye, and move it to an eye
on the shock cord while using the spinnaker. This will get the drum
and genoa away from the bow pulpit opening and give clear passage
for hoisting and dousing the spinnaker. Charlie

Thanks for the information on sails, has anyone taken their f21 out
into the ocean in rough seas, if so, how did it handle it? I’m
planning on taking mine out, curious as to how she’ll do, I’m used to
large sailboats offshore, don’t know what to expect from a small
sailboat.

I have taken our F-21 out in the rough SF bay numerous times. Winds
up to 30 knots, wind swell up to 8 feet. Lots of water over the bow
and into the cockpit, so ‘get ready to get wet’. This was under
reefed main only. Under lighter conditions, winds up to 15 kts and
waves up to 3-4 feet, I would fly the spinnaker. The only other sail
I had was the staysail which I only used in winds less than about 10
kts (per Hoyt’s instructions) which was rare on the bay, but came in
handy when I took the boat up to Lake Tahoe. I didn’t see any reason
for any other sails, but your sailing conditions may be different
enough to warrant looking at other options.
Basically the boat handles like a large Laser (but more stable :-),
so have fun…
